Great Britain poundThe Great Britain pound weakened against the Japanese yen and slowed its advance versus the US dollar after the report showed the UK economy grew with slower pace in the second quarter.<br />
<br />
The revised figure for growth of UK gross domestic product in the second quarter of 2011 was 0.2 percent, the same as in the preliminary estimate. It indicates slower expansion, compared to 0.5 percent growth in the first quarter. The report also mentioned that several special events affected Britain’s economy in Q2: the additional April public holiday, the royal wedding and the aftereffects of the Japanese tsunami.<br />
<br />
GBP/JPY fell from 126.12 to 125.68 today as of 9:24 GMT and touched the daily low of 125.41 earlier. GBP/USD climbed from 1.6278 to 1.6332.<br />

Maybe it’s because the state of Texas has weathered higher category hurricanes with far less fuss than that with which the East Coast is presently handling Hurricane Irene, but Texas Gov. Rick Perry refuses to allow the abundant meteorological moments of this week overshadow the economy. Political Ticker reports:<br />
<br />
The Texas governor appeared at a county GOP picnic in Des Moines on Saturday. During an exchange with reporters, Perry was asked if the president has been an effective leader during a week that saw two menacing natural disasters: an earthquake and currently the hurricane.<br />
<br />
Though Perry would not cast judgment, he did cast his answer in overtly political terms.<br />
<br />
“He has been an absolute disaster as a president from the standpoint of our economy. That’s what people are really focused on,” Perry said. “Taking a snapshot of whether or not he’s appropriately dealt with the hurricane – I don’t know yet. I’ll tell you when the hurricane’s over.”<br />
<br />
Frankly, the news media ought to take a leaf out of Perry’s book and remember the economy even in the midst of a rocky weather week. Irene has already caused significant inconvenience to coasters (as Ed reported this morning, 3 million are without power) and, even more tragically, has resulted in at least one death, but the media devoted so much time to the earthquake and pre-storm prep (probably because most of the media is on the East Coast) that the president essentially received a free pass on the dismal economic news that also emerged this week. Weekly jobless claims rose by 5,000. Home mortgage applications dropped to a new 15-year low. The CBO’s positive predictions of deficit reduction were based on measures that will never take effect.<br />
<br />
Of course the media should have devoted a significant amount of attention to the earthquake and to Hurricane Irene. Natural disasters are without question newsworthy — and, if Hurricane Katrina taught us anything, it’s that it would always be better to have too much media coverage on the front end than a need for endless media coverage on the back end. But it did seem eventually to grow a little out of proportion. I’ll be eager to read any Pew-Project-for-Excellence-in-Journalism-type research that breaks down the exact distribution of the news this week.<br />
<br />
At one point, I found myself so perplexed by the hype (The Weather Channel, for example, featured a reporter dramatically bemoaning roughly 25 mph winds — a relatively common day in states like Oklahoma and Kansas!) that I began to brainstorm conspiracy theories. Could it be, I wondered, that the media wants to concoct a more extreme disaster the president could then be demonstrated to have capably “solved,” to have adequately addressed? (Political Ticker’s headline for the story above helps this theory along, actually: “Perry not ready to praise Obama’s handling of Hurricane Irene,” the hed writer writes, as though it’s automatic and obvious that his handling of the storm should be praised. But, then, I tend to read too much into things.)<br />
<br />
I don’t really think that, of course. I think it’s August and news is slow — and, anyway, as it turns out, Irene did hit North Carolina with 85 mph winds — winds well worthy of a bit of bemoaning. By the time it hit the Northeast, it was just a tropical storm, but still damaging. Still, throughout the week, I found Fox News’ Shepard Smith’s consistent talk-down of both weather-related events refreshing and I find Perry’s comments particularly apt now.<br />
<br />
The Texas governor followed up his pseudo-criticism of the president with an important reminder: State-level leaders, even more so than the president or other national bureaucrats, will bear the brunt of responsibility of cleaning up after the storm.<br />
<br />
“Those governors of those states along the Eastern Seaboard are the ones that are actually going to be making the decisions that save the lives, that prepare for this hurricane, that do the search and rescue, and then frankly – do the first part of the recovery,” Perry said.<br />
<br />
Yep. Sure, federal-level disasters mandate a federal-level response, but, in America, folks pitch in and help their neighbors in an emergency. They don’t just wait for FEMA to inefficiently address their problems or for the president to glibly gloss over policy-created crises to wax eloquent about matters out of his control. Or, at least, in the America of my imagination, they don’t. Wish that were always the reality, as well.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5422441442447399014.post-9649700197139340562011-08-29T10:54:00.001-07:002011-08-29T10:54:46.755-07:00Fundamentals are Bad for US Dollar, But Week Wasn’t Bad<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi09vAiTzgm2DJBbZ5dVEcYUQWf-WcTlxK054QuCpJN7UVheI2rPOWau6Dfjl-JdGBqhpNTjpceyYTLH4z0eL9DQUjzKn_-gAOdkuJLx42NxgfqlEOzqTl1VZ_bAallh8RmKD78CdTBnbhQ/s1600/US_Dollar.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi09vAiTzgm2DJBbZ5dVEcYUQWf-WcTlxK054QuCpJN7UVheI2rPOWau6Dfjl-JdGBqhpNTjpceyYTLH4z0eL9DQUjzKn_-gAOdkuJLx42NxgfqlEOzqTl1VZ_bAallh8RmKD78CdTBnbhQ/s1600/US_Dollar.jpg" /></a></div><br />

US DollarThe fundamentals this week were negative for the US dollar, weakening the currency against some major counterparts, but performance of the greenback wasn’t that bad, considering all the pressure to the downside.<br />
<br />
There were plenty of bad new for the dollar this week. Bad housing data, rising unemployment claims and slower that expected growth of the US economy. The week ended with the speech of Ben Bernanke, who hinted at possibility of additional stimulus without detailing an actual plan.<br />
<br />
The dollar was dragged down by the unfavorable fundamentals and fell against the euro and commodity currencies (including the currencies of Canada, Australia and New Zealand). On the other hand, the dollar gained against the franc and rallied versus the yen before losing its gains by the end of the week as there aren’t many choices for investors who need a safe currency, but afraid of interventions of Japan and Switzerland. The pound also fell against the greenback as Britain has its own problems that erase attractiveness of the nation’s currency.<br />
<br />
Next week may also be hard for the dollar. Analysts predict another unfavorable report about hosing and are pessimistic about employment data.<br />
<br />
EUR/USD climbed from 1.4376 to 1.4498, while during the week it dropped to 1.4327. USD/CHF climbed from 0.7904 to 0.8058 and reached the daily high of 0.8157. AUD/USD surged from 1.0380 to 1.0569.<br />

A few days ago, the New York Times’ Bill Keller proposed asking “tougher questions” of presidential candidates about their faith, causing an uproar in both political and religious circles:<br />
<br />
This year’s Republican primary season offers us an important opportunity to confront our scruples about the privacy of faith in public life — and to get over them. We have an unusually large number of candidates, including putative front-runners, who belong to churches that are mysterious or suspect to many Americans. Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman are Mormons, a faith that many conservative Christians have been taught is a “cult” and that many others think is just weird. (Huntsman says he is not “overly religious.”) Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum are all affiliated with fervid subsets of evangelical Christianity, which has raised concerns about their respect for the separation of church and state, not to mention the separation of fact and fiction. </div><a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
Later, Keller published the questionnaire he’d like answered — and as it turns out, the entire exercise demonstrates what happens when the ignorant attempt to interrogate people on the irrelevant. Keller picked out a spooky term in question 7, one that the Left likes to toss around when discussing candidates who profess an evangelical Christian faith, in an attempt to make it appear that candidates like Michelle Bachmann, Rick Santorum, and Rick Perry (among others) want to establish a theocracy in the US:<br />
<br />
7. What do you think of the evangelical Christian movement known as Dominionism and the idea that Christians, and only Christians, should hold dominion over the secular institutions of the earth?<br />
<br />
Well, I guess I’m safe; I’m Catholic. And so, by the way is Rick Santorum, who is most certainly not “affiliated with fervid subsets of evangelical Christianity.” He attends a Latin Mass, which might give a few evangelicals — and maybe a few Catholics, too — the vapors. Keller’s ignorance is on full display right off the bat. If he can’t even bother to Google, what makes him an expert as a religious inquisitor?<br />
<br />
Until a couple of years ago, I’d never heard of dominionism. The only references I’ve ever seen to it since have come from the national media in the context of wow-those-Christians-are-scary stories … like Keller’s attempts to probe faith as a political test. At Patheos, Douglas Groothuis demolishes the notion that “dominionism” is any kind of mainstream component of modern evangelicalism:<br />
<br />
There is a buzz in the political beehive about the dark dangers of Bachmann’s association with “dominionism”—a fundamentalist movement heaven-bent on imposing a hellish theocracy on America. In the August 15 issue of The New Yorker, Ryan Lizza asserts that Bachmann has been ideologically shaped by “exotic” thinkers of the dominionist stripe who pose a threat to our secular political institutions. The piece—and much of the subsequent media reaction—is a calamity of confusion, conflation, and obfuscation.<br />
<br />
Lizza notes that Bachmann was influenced by the writings of Francis A. Schaeffer (1912-84), an evangelical minister, theologian, and philosopher. Schaeffer, along with the contemporary writer Nancy Pearcey and others, are “dominionists.” That is, they believe that “Christians alone are Biblically mandated to occupy secular institutions until Christ returns.” Worse yet, Schaeffer, in A Christian Manifesto (1981), supposedly “argued for the violent overthrow of the government if Roe vs. Wade isn’t reversed.” Lizza also writes of the influence of the prolific author Rousas John Rushdoony (1916-2001), who advocated “a pure Christian theocracy in which Old Testament law…would be instituted.” Bachman is allegedly thick as thieves with all these “exotic” subversives—and should be exposed as such.<br />
<br />
Having read reams of books from all these authors (and every book by Schaeffer) over the last thirty-five years, as well as having taught many of these books at the graduate level, I assign Mr. Lizza the grade of “F.” …<br />
<br />
Second, Rushdoony’s devotees make up but an infinitesimal fraction of Christian conservatives. The vast majority of those who have been influenced by certain aspects of Rushdoony’s writings emphatically reject his understanding of biblical law, as do I.<br />
<br />
Third, the key Christian influences on Bachman are not Rushdoony and his followers, but Francis Schaeffer and Nancy Pearcey. Schaeffer referred to Rushdoony’s views on mandating biblical law as “insanity,” and never sanctioned any form of theocracy. (The name “Rushdoony” does not even appear in the index of Schaeffer’s five-volume collected works.) Schaeffer explicitly condemned theocracy in A Christian Manifesto (p. 120-1). Nor did he call for the violent overthrow of the government if Roe V. Wade were not overturned. Schaeffer rather explained various ways of resisting tyranny according to a Christian worldview and in light of church history. He saw “civil disobedience” (his phrase) as a last resort and did not stipulate any specific conditions under which it would be advisable in America. In fact, Schaeffer worried (on p. 126) that speaking of civil disobedience is “frightening because there are so many kooky people around.” Further, “anarchy is never appropriate.”<br />
<br />
And it’s also a good idea to keep in mind what kind of looney sect to which Bachmann belongs … Lutheranism. As John Hinderaker writes at Power Line, all anyone had to do was ask her:<br />
<br />
This reminds me of a time, some years ago–it was either Michele’s first or second Congressional race–when she appeared at a public forum to debate the issues of the day. The first question from a local reporter was, “Do you believe that the Pope is the Antichrist?” The debate went downhill from there.<br />
<br />
A few days later I was talking to Michele on the telephone. Despite feeling that I knew her rather well, I had never discussed religion with her. I thought that the reporter’s question must be explained by her being a member of some bizarre sect. So I asked, “What denomination are you, anyway?” She replied, bewilderment evident in her voice, “I’m a Lutheran.”<br />
<br />
John also contrasts the hostility shown by the national media towards Christianity with the “benign” treatment it gives Islam:<br />
<br />
The press’s weirdly hostile attitude toward Christianity can be contrasted with its benign view of Islam in all its manifestations. The same reporters who fixate on Dominionism, a doctrine hardly anyone had heard of until a couple of weeks ago, take great offense at any suggestion that Wahhabism and other radical forms of Islam are significant. Never mind that Islamic extremists have carried out hundreds if not thousands of terrorist attacks, while Dominionists–assuming such people actually exist–have done nothing to cause the rest of us to be aware of them. The secular press’s attitude toward religion, at best inconsistent and driven throughout by partisan ideology, is one of the strangest aspects of our public life.<br />
<br />
Perhaps they are as ignorant about Islam as they are about Christianity. However, if they want to start asking questions about religion of presidential candidates, how about starting with Barack Obama and his 20-year affiliation with Jeremiah Wright and Trinity United Church of Christ? Wright took a lot of political stands that the media roundly ignored in the 2008 election, including his sermon that the US deserved the 9/11 attacks as “chickens coming home to roost,” supports Hamas, and infamously declared, “God damn the United States.” Maybe someone can ask about the TUCC’s adopted “value system” that insists that the US sends black men to “concentration camps.” Does Obama believe that? We don’t know, because Keller and his ilk didn’t bother to ask questions about Obama’s religion in 2008.<br />
<br />
If we extend Keller’s new position to Congress, maybe we can get answers in the Times to a few questions for Keith Ellison from Scott Johnson:<br />
<br />
4. When you were a member of the Nation of Islam, did you believe that Yakub was a black scientist who lived “6,600 years ago” and was responsible for creating the white race to be a “race of devils”?<br />
<br />
5. Have you joined a mosque in Minneapolis? When did you join it?<br />
<br />
6. Do you believe that Islamic law should be the law of the land in the United States? Do you think Islam should be subordinate to the constitutional separation between church and state?<br />
<br />
7. You are a liberal Democrat who advocates the Democratic Party’s positions on gay rights, abortion, and feminism. Which branch of Islam comports with your position on these issues?<br />
<br />
Silly Scott. The New York media is only scared of those Christians that they fail to understand, and fail to even research properly.<br />
<br />
Update: By the way, Perry is one of those scary … Methodists. Also, via Wikipedia, here’s a quote from Perry’s book on the relationship between church and state: “Let’s be clear: I don’t believe government, which taxes people regardless of their faith, should espouse a specific faith. I also don’t think we should allow a small minority of atheists to sanitize our civil dialogue on religious references.” Oooooh … what spooky tolerance he demonstrates!<br />
<br />
Update II: John Sexton at Verum Serum has excerpts from Schaeffer that directly refute Ryan Lizza’s caricature of his work.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5422441442447399014.post-33921435055495518422011-08-29T10:53:00.000-07:002011-08-29T10:53:22.138-07:00“It was like walking into Hell”<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiF3Blz4skoYpIUdAkHCtDCC1PfsjFYLx5sbCs5OXE3RzPoo4x9ozZDadDvf7Sr-5bPVXBpXTgyrbh_nmEeIJrU12xW5Mv9dSKyLTDyjUlv1C8u8A4HHG4yhfxfl68BdkxexVaf6Nmdgyro/s1600/bush-natgeo.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiF3Blz4skoYpIUdAkHCtDCC1PfsjFYLx5sbCs5OXE3RzPoo4x9ozZDadDvf7Sr-5bPVXBpXTgyrbh_nmEeIJrU12xW5Mv9dSKyLTDyjUlv1C8u8A4HHG4yhfxfl68BdkxexVaf6Nmdgyro/s1600/bush-natgeo.jpg" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">“It was like walking into Hell”<br />

Greg Hengler captured this emotional moment from the National Geographic special last night that featured George Bush giving his recollection of 9/11 and the days immediately afterward. This clip gives the backstory to Bush’s famous declaration from Ground Zero that the people who destroyed the towers would soon hear from an enraged United States of America. Bush describes the scene as being something from Hell, and that he sensed a “palpable blood lust” to avenge the deaths of thousands of Americans:</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

I missed the show last night; I was distracted by some unexpected bad news in the family. I have it set to record this evening and will watch it later. If you missed it as well, it airs again tonight on the National Geographic Channel at 9 pm ET and again at midnight. The previews of the one-hour special are very intriguing. Apparently the only voice we will hear, other than from archival video of the events, is Bush’s, as the interviewer’s questions have been removed from the video. </div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5422441442447399014.post-33437486996488885982011-08-08T06:06:00.000-07:002011-08-08T06:06:49.471-07:00Quotes of the day<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzZOX01doyKGZcj4bJ3gZBMEnLPuYLQSPLWhbTaViyfEYSF_Xl_mJHb8vVd0dIAR3TD0UdSx2Zlmn-RHzfW9Byq39Vz4w2x9QzgupvygfuvbittvNhsUdBNruNuPcrr-oFraDHaBNM0Uk/s1600/jk.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzZOX01doyKGZcj4bJ3gZBMEnLPuYLQSPLWhbTaViyfEYSF_Xl_mJHb8vVd0dIAR3TD0UdSx2Zlmn-RHzfW9Byq39Vz4w2x9QzgupvygfuvbittvNhsUdBNruNuPcrr-oFraDHaBNM0Uk/s200/jk.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

“The S&P will monitor the U.S. for about six to 24 months to see whether its fiscal position deteriorates further or if political gridlock gets worse. It’s great and quite noble but he’s in a situation in which he really has to stand up for things in which he believes,’ Baker said…<br />

“‘The American people need the Republicans to stop their reckless and irresponsible political games that led to this unfortunate downgrade,’ said House Assistant Democratic Leader James Clyburn (S.C.). ‘They have repeatedly walked away from the negotiating table whenever the two sides got close to a balanced blend of both spending cuts and revenue raisers.’<br />
<br />
“Rep. Steve Israel (N.Y.), chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, said: ‘The indisputable fact is that until this group of Roadblock Republicans forced Speaker Boehner to walk away from a deal, America never came to the brink of a default and we never experienced a downgrade. This downgrade is the direct result of Roadblock Republicans.’”<br />

“Those (many) who are rubbishing the eminently rubbishable S&P tonight are generally not grappling with something we’ve been talking about for years around these parts: The current fiscal trajectory of the United States is not just deteriorating rapidly, it’s definitionally unsustainable. That’s not crazy libertarians talking, that’s Barack Obama and Ben Bernanke…<br />
<br />
“I eagerly look forward to this being blamed on libertarians, but even more than that I truly look forward to the day when the political class in this doddering country recognizes that you can’t just wave away a spending spiral by pretending that it doesn’t exist.”<br />

“For Republican leaders, there was pride in a hand well played. ‘I think some of our members may have thought the default issue was a hostage you might take a chance at shooting,’ Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said. ‘Most of us didn’t think that. What we did learn is this — it’s a hostage that’s worth ransoming.’…<br />
<br />
“‘Would Democrats have ever agreed if they thought the new freshman class was going to roll over? No. The freshmen made our hand so much stronger,’ [Kevin McCarthy] said in an interview. ‘You had a fear of how far they would go. I’m sure the president looks back, too, and was fearful. But in negotiations, isn’t that the best thing?’<br />
<br />
“Chaffetz, who voted against both Boehner’s first proposal and the final bill, said he was well aware of how the leadership had used his and others’ willingness to let a default happen as a negotiating chip, and said he didn’t mind at all. ‘We weren’t kidding around, either,’ he said. ‘We would have taken it down.’”</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

<br />
Not that my hopes as to what the Super Committee would accomplish were ever that high, but it still hurts to hear one of my congressional heroes call out the improbability of any meaningful accomplishment emerging from the work of the joint committee. The Wall Street Journal reports:<br />
<br />
House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R., Wis.), a top choice among Republicans for a deficit-cutting super-committee formed last week, on Sunday sought to tamp down expectations for the panel.<br />
<br />
“I don’t think a grand bargain is going to come out of this,” Mr. Ryan said on Fox News Sunday. He said that any deal for more than the $1.5 trillion in deficit-reduction over 10 years that the committee is charged with finding would depend on whether Democrats were willing to agree to overhaul entitlement programs. “I don’t see any agreement from the other side getting anywhere close to doing that,” he said. …<br />
<br />
“People are overemphasizing what this committee is going to achieve,” Mr. Ryan said.<br />
<br />
“I want to make sure people understand that I don’t think this is going to be a committee that is going to fix all our fiscal problems,” he said.<br />
<br />
Of course Ryan is right. So far, all that has ever proceeded from the painful and prolonged deliberations surrounding any budget debate — starting with the CR debates at the outset of this congressional session — is the absolute bare minimum to preserve the status quo. But that doesn’t mean whoever ends up on the Committee shouldn’t try — or that those of us watching and commenting shouldn’t encourage their attempt.<br />
<br />
In the same Fox interview, the House Budget Committee Chairman was also cool about the credit downgrade. “We more or less saw this coming,” Ryan said. That’s certainly the reasonable position to take, even though everybody from George Will to David Axelrod seems determined to write off the downgrade as anything but what it was: An accurate (and should-have-been-expected!) reflection of the nation’s lack of perfect creditworthiness. Now is certainly the time to stop the blame game — whether whom the pols and pundits are blaming is S&P, the Tea Party, Democrats or Republicans — and focus on solutions. May I humbly recommend the plan put forward by my former employer, The Heritage Foundation? Or, for that matter, the original Ryan budget?</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5422441442447399014.post-530284380076378932011-08-08T06:02:00.000-07:002011-08-08T06:02:21.823-07:00Newsweek keeping it classy in presidential coverage<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh62lTQr_1JiZS84vHDooRc2ImlyyGZOg5O-u5pWpTGVFVRUCORHdbtQasBWr8iFFq99nJnskiPcdNdRHTDV_pBkUOAoDCxacwaJKzUpG6xjJQwIvJ82PEfxtNOLavTIM4JpwzL-nH4Fuw/s1600/bachmann-newsweek-tn.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="167" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh62lTQr_1JiZS84vHDooRc2ImlyyGZOg5O-u5pWpTGVFVRUCORHdbtQasBWr8iFFq99nJnskiPcdNdRHTDV_pBkUOAoDCxacwaJKzUpG6xjJQwIvJ82PEfxtNOLavTIM4JpwzL-nH4Fuw/s200/bachmann-newsweek-tn.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

Memo to conservative women: When approached by Newsweek or Time for a cover story, always bring your own photographer. Michelle Malkin knows a thing or two about the predilection at the news magazines for using unflattering photos on their covers, and this week’s cover of Michele Bachmann is no exception to that trend. In this case, they’re not even being subtle, as Time did with its Ann Coulter cover a few years ago in which they distorted the perspective to give the firebrand author exaggerated length to her legs and a shrunken torso. Newsweek perches a blank-looking Bachmann over block letters calling her “THE QUEEN OF RAGE”:<br />
<br />
Rage? I’ve certainly heard Bachmann talk tough about encroaching government and the avalanche of spending and debt, but in all the years I’ve known and covered Bachmann, I’ve never heard her rage at anyone. It seems as though Newsweek has a double standard in effect for conservatives, women, and especially conservative women. When Barack Obama told an audience in June 2008 that “if they bring a knife to a fight, we bring a gun,” did Newsweek crown him the King of Rage — or at any time in his class-warfare-based presidential campaign? For that matter, when Debbie Wasserman-Schultz stated that Republicans wanted to reinstate Jim Crow laws, did anyone accuse her of being filled with rage? Not exactly.<br />
<br />
The Boss Emeritus notes that the signal has been sent and received by Newsweek/The Daily Beast to the sinistrophere:<br />
<br />
The once-mighty Newsweek magazine-turned-Beast is apparently so proud of its Democratic Underground-pandering Michele Bachmann cover and title that its editors are promoting the photo and pushing the hashtag #QueenofRage on Twitter.<br />
<br />
And the left-wing press is eating it up:<br />
<br />
Gawker, predictably: “Ha ha, just kidding—they don’t call her CrazyEyes for nothing.”<br />
<br />
The Village Voice rejoices after receiving a high-res image of the cover (and dutifully cropping Bachmann’s eyes).<br />
<br />
They’re promoting this through a Twitter hashtag? Yeah, that’s keeping it classy.<br />
<br />
Conservative candidates have to learn that Newsweek, Time, and other mainstream publications won’t be their friends, or even be objective. They plan on making news, not reporting it. This is just one of the least subtle examples we’ll see in the next fifteen months.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5422441442447399014.post-60642228785965600162011-08-07T22:55:00.000-07:002011-08-07T22:55:01.823-07:00Opening on October 12, 2012: The Obama Is Totally Awesome blockbuster movie<span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: separate; color: black; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: small; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: 2; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;"></span><br />

</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">The way the economy has turned out since the launch of Obamanomics, some people speculate that the only argument Barack Obama might have in 2012 is, “I got Bin Laden.” Apparently, Hollywood has the same worries. That may be why a new film about the mission that killed al-Qaeda’s master has an opening date that comes three weeks before the election — a coincidence that even Maureen Dowd can’t buy:</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"> The White House clearly blessed the dramatic reconstruction of the mission by Nicholas Schmidle in The New Yorker — so vividly descriptive of the Seals’ looks, quotes and thoughts that Schmidle had to clarify after the piece was published that he had not actually talked to any of them.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"> “I’ll just say that the 23 Seals on the mission that evening were not the only ones who were listening to their radio communications,” Schmidle said, answering readers’ questions in a live chat, after taking flak for leaving some with the impression that he had interviewed the heroes when he wrote in his account that it was based on “some of their recollections.”</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"> The White House is also counting on the Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal big-screen version of the killing of Bin Laden to counter Obama’s growing reputation as ineffectual. The Sony film by the Oscar-winning pair who made “The Hurt Locker” will no doubt reflect the president’s cool, gutsy decision against shaky odds. Just as Obamaland was hoping, the movie is scheduled to open on Oct. 12, 2012 — perfectly timed to give a home-stretch boost to a campaign that has grown tougher.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">Well, the project is off to a great start. The writer has already been caught fibbing about his sources. The combination of Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal worked well in The Hurt Locker (I interviewed Boal twice before the film opened) and gave a fair presentation of the military, in most estimations; this film will almost certainly be worth the price of the ticket. That is, it will be if the film focuses on the bravery and accomplishment of the SEALs (an acronym that the NYT manages to get wrong in Dowd’s column — it’s not “Seals”) and not on Obama. Its opening date signals a different intent.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">Dowd, however, notes that the “blessing” in this case is extraordinarily self-serving for this particular administration:</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"> The moviemakers are getting top-level access to the most classified mission in history from an administration that has tried to throw more people in jail for leaking classified information than the Bush administration.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"> It was clear that the White House had outsourced the job of manning up the president’s image to Hollywood when Boal got welcomed to the upper echelons of the White House and the Pentagon and showed up recently — to the surprise of some military officers — at a C.I.A. ceremony celebrating the hero Seals.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">The entertainment industry seems pretty worried about Obama’s prospects, and they should be. This time, money won’t be enough. They need to make a two-hour campaign ad, apparently. For a President who rudely and ignorantly scolded the Supreme Court over its Citizens United decision, Obama sure seems happy to take advantage of it, doesn’t he?</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">Update: It’s stories like this that put Glenn Reynolds in the mood for some tax hikes:</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"> Were I a Republican senator or representative, I would be agitating to repeal the “Eisenhower tax cut” on the movie industry and restore the excise tax. I think I would also look at imposing similar taxes on sales of DVDs, pay-per-view movies, CDs, downloadable music, and related products.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"> I’d also look at the tax and accounting treatment of these industries to see if they were taking advantage of any special “loopholes” that could be closed as a means of reducing “tax expenditures.” (Answer: Yes, they are.)</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"> America, after all, is facing the largest national debt in relation to GDP that it has faced since the end of World War II, so a return to the measures deemed necessary then is surely justifiable now.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"> The president’s own rhetoric about revenues certainly suggests so. Perhaps the bill could be named the “Greatest Generation Tax Fairness Act” in recognition of its history.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"> Should legislation of this sort be passed — or even credibly threatened — I think we can expect to see Hollywood rediscover the dangers posed by “job killing tax increases,” just as pro-tax-increase Warren Buffet changed his tune once his own corporate-jet business was threatened.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">Doesn’t everyone have to “pitch in,” as our President demanded throughout this debate? This puts me in mind of my review of Two Weeks Notice from December 2002 (pre-blogging!), a film which was overtly hostile to capitalism — and completely hypocritical:</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"> First, TWN continues the whole “bad capitalist — good socialist” thread that runs through Hollywood films. Bullock, being the daughter of 60′s radicals (“You were on the White House enemies list when you were five years old!” her parents tell her with glee), is the idealistic lawyer (LAWYER!) who wants to set the world right by stopping Grant’s company from redeveloping New York City. Grant seduces Bullock by tempting her with the millions of dollars she can direct into charitable efforts. But nowhere in the film does she ever do anything like that, nor is that given more than a passing mention by any character in the movie. And never is any hint that redevelopment (a) provides jobs, and (b) stimulates the economy by providing lease space for businesses — and therefore more jobs — rather than leaving buildings as museums for architecture. The whole thing is very one-sided. Fortunately, TWN doesn’t beat you over the head with it, but it definitely has to get in a couple of shots at President Bush. I guess you don’t get SAG sanction without that, these days.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"> (Just a thought, but how exactly do they raise the money to shoot these anti-capitalist films, anyway? It takes at least $20 million to make a studio film these days. Wouldn’t THAT money be better spent on saving old buildings from destruction? Or is it only okay for Hollywood studios and stars to make profits? Dana Ivey says that a $50 million profit is “unconscionable”; I wonder what the writers think about Bullock’s and Grant’s salaries.)</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">Bullock’s salary for this film didn’t get released, but she made $15 million for Murder By Numbers that same year. Grant made $12.5 million for this film. I have no problem with Hollywood actors getting big bucks to star in films; they operate in a free market, and should earn as much as the market will bear. It’s their money. Too bad Hollywood doesn’t have that same attitude with everyone else.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5422441442447399014.post-26012139499233045982011-08-07T22:53:00.001-07:002011-08-07T22:53:42.282-07:00McCain: This is Obama’s downgrade, not the Tea Party’s<span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: separate; color: black; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: small; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: 2; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;"></span><br />

David Gregory’s next guest was Kerry’s Senate colleague John McCain, last heard castigating Tea Party activists as “Hobbits” who should “return to Middle Earth.” McCain’s tune has changed in the interim, however, as he rejected Kerry’s characterization of the downgrade and instead put it on the man who never had a plan (via The Corner):</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />

</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"> McCain defended the S & P downgrade, saying it would be a mistake to “shoot the messenger.” He said he hoped the downgrade would lead to the congressional super committee looking seriously at entitlement reform.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">At one point, John Boehner did have $800 billion in new revenues, achieved through tax reform that broadened the tax base, as a trade for bigger cuts in spending. However, even that $4 trillion deal would have only dented the upward trajectory of debt, because it focused mainly on discretionary spending instead of serious entitlement reform. Prior to the deal, we were on track to add $12 trillion in debt over the next ten years, and even a $4 trillion reduction would only mean bringing annual deficits down to $800 billion a year on average. Take a look at this chart to guess what kind of impact this nibbling at the edges would have produced.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">The White House is pushing the “Tea Party downgrade” message pretty heavily today. Kerry carried Obama’s water on MTP with David Gregory, and David Axelrod did the same on CBS’ Face the Nation. They even dragged Howard Dean out for CBS to claim that conservatives are “smoking tea” for wanting real reductions in spending and future entitlement liabilities rather than higher taxes.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">McCain, however, gets this one right. Voters sent a clear message in last year’s midterms, and it wasn’t “spend more and increase taxes.” Democrats refused to listen in 2009 when voters revolted over the addition of another massive entitlement program; voters spent all of 2010 revolting over Obamanomics; and they punished Democrats in November for not listening to them. Democrats still aren’t listening, and the way they are reacting now, 2012 may make 2010 look like a good year for the Democratic Party.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5422441442447399014.post-67880734668286492832011-07-17T01:46:00.001-07:002011-07-17T01:46:48.519-07:00Officials close to suspect sketch as Mumbai death toll rises to 19<b> <div class="cnnByline">By <b>Harmeet Shah Singh</b>, CNN<script type="text/javascript">

Rakesh Maria, anti-terrorist squad chief of the state of Maharashtra, said a witness at one of the blast sites provided information that is helping authorities prepare the composite.<br />
The sketch will not be made public, Maria added. Rather, it will be shared with officials investigation the attacks.<br />
Meanwhile, two more people have succumbed to their wounds, bringing the fatality count from the Wednesday blasts to 20, the government said.<br />
Earlier, Indian authorities said they received no warnings about the blasts -- the first major assault in India's largest city since the 2008 siege. So far, no group has been singled out for blame, nor has any claimed responsibility, officials said. <br />
"All groups hostile to India are under radar," Home Minister P. Chidambaram said Thursday. "We are not ruling out anything. We're not ruling in anything. We're looking at everyone and we will find out who is behind these attacks."<br />
He refused to accept a lack of intelligence about the attacks as failure despite widespread anger of Mumbaikars who have witnessed carnage in their city too many times.<br />
"Whoever perpetrated these attacks has worked in a very, very clandestine manner," Chidambaram said. "It's not a failure of intelligence."<br />
The three blasts Wednesday evening occurred within minutes of each other in the areas of Opera House, Zaveri Bazaar and Dadar, all busy commercial hubs teeming with people. Forensic evidence collected from the scenes suggested that the attackers used ammonium nitrate with a timing device for the detonations, Chidambaram said.<br />

</script>July 15, 2011 -- Updated 1833 GMT (0233 HKT)</div><div class="cnn_strytmstmp"> </div></b><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Washington (CNN)</b> -- President Barack Obama said Friday he has not given up hope for a broad deficit reduction deal, urging Republicans to accept a fiscal stability package that includes higher taxes on the wealthy and reforms to politically popular entitlement programs such as Medicare and Social Security.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Such a measure would be part of plan to avert a potential economic meltdown by raising the nation's current $14.3 trillion federal debt ceiling. </div><div style="text-align: justify;">The president also stressed he has not ruled out less ambitious plans focused more narrowly on a debt ceiling increase. </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Let's "set politics aside" and "do some tough stuff," Obama told reporters at a White House news conference. But "if Washington operates as usual and can't get anything done, let's at least avert Armageddon."</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Tense negotiations between top Democrats and Republicans, reflecting core ideological principles on taxes and the size of government, have become a race against the clock. Administration officials have warned that a failure to raise the debt ceiling by August 2 could trigger a partial default.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">If Washington lacks the money to pay its bills, interest rates could skyrocket and the value of the dollar could decline, among other things.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The seriousness of the situation was reinforced Thursday when a major credit rating agency, Standard and Poor's, said it was placing the United States' sovereign rating on "CreditWatch with negative implications."</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Moody's Investors Services -- another major rating agency -- said Wednesday it would put the sterling bond rating of the United States on review for possible downgrade.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Obama warned this week he could not guarantee that older Americans will receive their Social Security checks next month if a deal is not reached. GOP leaders accused the president of resorting to scare tactics. </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Talks over the last five days, however, have failed to produce a concrete deal. Obama has suggested that a sixth meeting could be held this weekend if sufficient progress isn't made, according to a Republican aide familiar with the latest negotiations.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The president told congressional leaders Thursday he expected them to consult with their respective caucuses and find agreement over the next 24 to 36 hours on how to proceed.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">House Republicans have shown no sign of accepting higher taxes on the rich as part of a so-called "balanced" approach to debt reduction. GOP leaders, who consider tax hikes detrimental to the economic recovery, blasted the president Friday morning for failing to produce what they consider to be a legitimate spending cut plan. </div><div style="text-align: justify;">The Republicans also said they intend to move forward with a vote next week with the "cut, cap, and balance" plan -- a blueprint to significantly cut spending, cap future expenditures and amend the Constitution to require a balanced budget in the future. </div><div style="text-align: justify;">"No one wants the United States to default on our obligations," said House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio. But "it's time for Democrats to get serious."</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The plan, favored by tea party conservatives, has virtually no chance of passing Congress. Obama indicated Friday he believes the plan is little more than a political stunt to appease conservatives, and argued it would require "substantial" cuts to Medicare and Social Security. </div><div style="text-align: justify;">He also dismissed the push for a constitutional amendment, arguing that political leaders should just "do our jobs."</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Obama repeatedly insisted GOP leaders are out of step with public opinion, arguing most voters support a combination of spending cuts and tax hikes. </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Republicans should be "listening not just to lobbyists or special interests," he declared. "This is not just a Democratic understanding." </div><div style="text-align: justify;">The president said he is still willing to tackle entitlement reform -- something opposed by elements of the Democratic base -- but stressed it could not be done at the expense of current benefit recipients and not in a way that would fundamentally alter the nature of the programs. </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Obama made it clear at Thursday's negotiations that he still favors a package that generates savings of approximately $4 trillion over roughly the next decade, a Democrat familiar with the talks told CNN.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Fallback plans that take major entitlement reform and tax hikes off the table may include between $1.5 trillion and $1.7 trillion in savings previously agreed to in talks led by Vice President Joe Biden. </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Administration officials have also discussed extending and possibly expanding the payroll tax cut -- a nod to sagging employment figures -- as well as extending unemployment insurance, according to a Democratic official familiar with the talks.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Obama said Friday that reports the talks have become "ugly" in the last week are overblown. Multiple sources, however, have indicated that discussions between the president and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Virginia, became particularly tense earlier in the week.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Cantor has floated the idea of a short-term debt ceiling hike, while Obama is seeking an increase lasting at least through the end of the 2012 campaign.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">On Thursday, Boehner downplayed reports of a split between himself and Cantor. Analysts have speculated that Cantor, viewed in some circles as more conservative than Boehner, may be using the crisis to undermine GOP support for the speaker.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">"We're in the foxhole" together, Boehner told reporters Thursday. "I'm glad Eric's there."</div><div style="text-align: justify;">One of the issues at heart of the current debate is Obama's call for more tax revenue by allowing tax cuts from the Bush presidency to expire at the end of 2012 for families making more than $250,000. His plan would keep the lower tax rates for Americans who earn less.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Obama noted earlier this week he is not looking to raise any taxes until 2013 or later. In exchange, the president said, he wants to ensure that the current progressive nature of the tax code is maintained, with higher-income Americans assessed higher tax rates.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">But resistance to higher taxes is now a bedrock principle for most Republicans, enforced by conservative crusaders such as political activist Grover Norquist. Norquist's group, Americans for Tax Reform, has sponsored a high-profile pledge to oppose any tax increase. </div><div style="text-align: justify;">The pledge has been signed by more than 230 House members and 40 senators, almost all of them Republicans.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, confirmed Thursday that he and McConnell are working on a possible debt ceiling measure that could come up in the event the broader negotiations fail to reach agreement. It is based in part on a plan McConnell unveiled this week that would set up three short-term increases in the debt ceiling while at the same time registering the disapproval of Congress for such a move.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">McConnell's proposal would give Obama power to raise the debt ceiling by a total of $2.5 trillion, but also would require three congressional votes on the issue before the 2012 general election.</div><div class="cnnInline" style="text-align: justify;">Both Obama and Boehner said Friday the McConnell plan is not the preferred option, but indicated a variation of it could ultimately be accepted in order to avoid a larger crisis. </div><div class="cnnInline" style="text-align: justify;"><a href="http://edition.cnn.com/2011/POLITICS/07/15/debt.talks/index.html?hpt=hp_bn1">http://edition.cnn.com/2011/POLITICS/07/15/debt.talks/index.html?hpt=hp_bn1</a></div><div class="cnnInline" style="text-align: justify;"><br />

</script>July 16, 2011 -- Updated 0500 GMT (1300 HKT)</div></div></b><b>London (CNN)</b> -- Two key executives in Rupert Murdoch's media empire resigned Friday, and their former boss added public relations muscle as he began a series of apologies in the phone-hacking scandal.<br />
Out are Rebekah Brooks, chief executive of News International, and her predecessor in the job, Les Hinton, who most recently served as chief executive of Dow Jones, publisher of The Wall Street Journal.<br />
Hinton wrote Murdoch that he had seen reports of actual and alleged misconduct when he was executive chairman of News International, which operated the now-defunct News of the World.<br />
"The pain caused to innocent people is unimaginable," Hinton said in a letter provided by Dow Jones. "That I was ignorant of what apparently happened is irrelevant and in the circumstances I feel it is proper for me to resign from News Corp., and apologize to those hurt by the actions of the News of the World."<br />
For his part, Murdoch began a campaign of contrition and reform Friday, apologizing to the family of a murdered British teenager whose voicemail allegedly was hacked by staffers of News of the World.<br />
"As the founder of the company, I was appalled to find out what happened," Murdoch said after speaking with relatives of Milly Dowler, 13, who went missing and was later found dead. "Of course I apologized."<br />
Murdoch will offer a broader apology to those whose privacy may have been violated by journalists in an ad that is to appear in newspapers Saturday. <br />
Police in the United Kingdom have identified almost 4,000 potential targets of phone hacking. There were also allegations that News Corp. reporters may have bribed law enforcement officers.<br />
Some of the claims Brooks faces relate to the News of the World's alleged hacking, while she was editor, into Dowler's mobile phone account.<br />
Staffers were accused of intercepting messages in search of news. They then allegedly deleted messages to keep Dowler's mailbox from filling up, giving her family and friends false hope that the schoolgirl was still alive.<br />
The family's attorney, Mark Lewis, said the family will seek "legal remedies" after their ordeal.<br />
"They were suffering private grief," Lewis said. "People were intruding into it."<br />
Murdoch appeared humble and sincere during the meeting, Lewis added. "He apologized many times."<br />
Murdoch's News of the World, a 168-year-old tabloid that was Britain's biggest Sunday newspaper, folded over the weekend in the wake of accusations that its reporters illegally eavesdropped on the phone messages of murder and terrorism victims, politicians and celebrities.<br />
"We are sorry for the serious wrongdoing that occurred," Murdoch will say in Saturday's ad. "We are deeply sorry for the hurt suffered by the individuals affected."<br />
"The News of the World was in the business of holding others to account. It failed when it came to itself," according to text of the ad provided by News International, which will also express regret for not acting more quickly "to sort things out."<br />
Murdoch will say in the ad that he realizes that apologizing is not enough and he pledges concrete action.<br />
British Prime Minister David Cameron has been among those publicly decrying the hacking, blasting Murdoch's company Wednesday as he launched a high-powered investigation into the nation's press.<br />
Yet he has his own ties to the scandal, given his relationship with Andy Coulson.<br />
Coulson quit as News of the World editor in 2007, after his former royal editor and a private detective were convicted of conspiracy to hack into royals' voicemails. But even while offering his resignation, he claimed to be unaware of the crimes and he was not charged at the time.<br />
Months later, Coulson joined up with Cameron, then the Conservative Party leader. After last year's election, Cameron rose to prime minister -- and took Coulson with him, as his communications director. <br />
Coulson worked from Downing Street through January, when he resigned as Cameron's spokesman when the scandal blew up afresh. <br />
Cameron hosted Coulson overnight in March at Chequers, the prime minister's country estate, a Downing Street source said Friday. The aim of the invite, added the source, was to thank his former communications director for his work on Cameron's behalf.<br />
Then, earlier this month, Coulson was himself arrested in connection with claims of phone hacking and corruption dating to his days as the News of the World editor.<br />
After the arrest, the prime minister took full responsibility for hiring Coulson. But while not denying this personal connection, Cameron has maintained public pressure against News Corp.<br />
This is just one of a flurry of dizzying developments related to the scandal in recent days. News Corp., which has been at the center of the storm, has hired the firm Edelman to handle its public relations and prominent U.S. attorney Brendan V. Sullivan Jr. to help navigate.<br />
One brick to fall Friday was Brooks, who had been under pressure to step down. A chief executive of News International, she was News of the World editor at the time of some of the most serious allegations against the newspaper. <br />
"As chief executive of the company, I feel a deep sense of responsibility for the people we have hurt, and I want to reiterate how sorry I am for what we now know to have taken place," Brooks said in a statement through News International.<br />
"I have believed that the right and responsible action has been to lead us through the heat of the crisis. However, my desire to remain on the bridge has made me a focal point of the debate."<br />
She said that the focus on her is "detracting attention" from endeavors to fix the problems and that her resignation gives her more time to fight the allegations against her.<br />
Cameron believes that Brooks' resignation was the right decision, a Downing Street spokesman said. Opposition Labour leader Ed Miliband said he was pleased she had "finally taken responsibility for the terrible events that happened on her watch, like the hacking of Milly Dowler's phone."<br />
Former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott, who says police now tell him his phone was hacked 44 times, also welcomed Brooks' resignation.<br />
"She seems to be the center of all of it, and yet she keeps saying 'Not me' -- that seems to be the common line at News International," he said, adding that her resignation is "a decent step towards getting better and decent reporting in this country."<br />
Prescott described Murdoch as a "spider in the middle of this web" and said it was "about time we took him on rather than running away from him." <br />
Campaign group Hacked Off, which has been calling for a full inquiry into alleged phone hacking by News of the World, said: "The key issue is not however whether Rebekah Brooks is in work, but whether she lied to Parliament, told the full truth to the police or was engaged in a massive cover-up. That is what we want. The victims want to know."<br />
James Murdoch, Rupert's son and chairman of News International, thanked Brooks for "her 22 years of service to the company" and said he understood her decision to resign.<br />
"She has been one of the outstanding editors of her generation and she can be proud of many accomplishments as an executive. We support her as she takes this step to clear her name," he said in a statement.<br />
"We will follow this up in the future with communications about the actions we have taken to address the wrongdoing that occurred," he said.<br />
A day before she resigned, Brooks agreed to attend a hearing before British lawmakers Tuesday into the phone-hacking scandal. However, she said her answers might be limited by ongoing police and judicial inquiries.<br />
James and Rupert Murdoch confirmed late Thursday that they would also appear at the July 19 hearing before the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, after initially declining to attend.<br />
In Friday's statement, James Murdoch said he and his father would speak to the committee "directly about our determination to put things right. The company has made mistakes. It is not only receiving appropriate scrutiny, but is also responding to unfair attacks by setting the record straight."<br />
Tom Mockridge will replace Brooks, News Corp. said Friday. Mockridge is a former newspaper journalist who has been the chief executive of Sky Italia since 2003.<br />
Murdoch said Mockridge is an "outstanding executive with unrivalled experience across our journalism and television businesses."<br />
Meanwhile, the FBI is investigating News Corp. after a report that employees or associates may have tried to hack into phone conversations and voice mail of September 11 survivors, victims and their families.<br />

Monthly Presidential chart is below. Then I’ll go into some of the hard realities facing Hot Air’s front runner. Send your questions and comments to me here.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-31726" height="272" src="http://media.hotair.com/greenroom/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/julymo2mosurv.png" title="julymo2mosurv" width="513" /><b>Sarah Palin</b> has returned to almost her highest vote take since the survey began, at 36.94% of the vote.<b> Michele Bachmann</b> and <b>Rick Perry </b>run closely together, coming in second (19.95%) and third (18.91%) respectively. <b>Herman Cain</b> takes fourth at 6.68%, continuing his downward movement since his May highs. <b>Mitt Romney</b> takes fifth, at 6.3%.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Palin may still be on top of the overall results, but she is in major danger of being eclipsed in the primaries by Bachmann and/or Perry<b>. </b>The following pie chart should make Palin supporters very, very uneasy.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-31727" height="257" src="http://media.hotair.com/greenroom/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/palbachjuly.png" title="palbachjuly" width="361" /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">(Palin beats Perry by 10 points, with unaffiliated voters breaking roughly 3-to-2 to Perry. The situation I lay out below is the more serious situation of the two for Palin.)</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Hot Air is a site that, as these surveys consistently show, has a very strong and organized Palin following — and Hot Air tilts toward the Grassroots Right anyway — yet from her baseline vote to her head-to-head vote against Bachmann, Palin ekes out only a four point win, gaining 16 points from her baseline vs. Bachmann’s 28 point gain. If Bachmann takes that sort of ratio of unaffiliated voters in a head-to-head primary, I don’t see how Palin overcomes Bachmann, let alone overcomes whoever makes it out of the establishment primary of Romney, Pawlenty et al. If Palin’s overall Hot Air numbers again drop back to 32% or so, she will likely lose to Bachmann in the Hot Air head-to-head match-up.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">There’s a protective instinct in play here, too, and it appears that even grassroot-ers see Bachmann as a safer option to Palin. The 2nd choice Perry vote hammers this home pretty clearly.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-31732" height="141" src="http://media.hotair.com/greenroom/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/perryvoter2july.png" title="perryvoter2july" width="209" /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">But Bachmann’s pathway to the nomination is not a cakewalk and is complicated by Perry’s candidacy: Perry is not only the second choice for Palin, but for Bachmann as well.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-31728" height="148" src="http://media.hotair.com/greenroom/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/perry2ndjuly.png" title="perry2ndjuly" width="342" />Which pretty well explains this outcome:</div><div style="text-align: left;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-31729" height="256" src="http://media.hotair.com/greenroom/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/perbachjuly.png" title="perbachjuly" width="394" /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Whoever emerges between Perry and Bachmann will have the electoral advantage on Palin, who it appears has serious electoral maneuvering problems even among the base. Palin’s strength is the excitement of her supporters and the high commitment of those supporters to her. Her weakness is, simply, that there won’t be enough of them to carry her through the current field of primary candidates. Former High Priest of ObamaMania Evan Thomas (who also sidelines as a Newsweek editor) became an apostate by noting that demagoguery wastes time and makes it harder to find solutions. Thomas “applaud[s] the energy,” but wonders when Obama will start presidenting instead of being a party hack:</div><script src="http://player.ooyala.com/player.js?embedCode=BrMThsMjokMFF9p4-nwedv9DiOAYz7b2&video_pcode=k4Nmw6Cri746xA2OsoSlngyrIudg&width=320&height=240&deepLinkEmbedCode=BrMThsMjokMFF9p4-nwedv9DiOAYz7b2"></script><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">On “Inside Washington,” host Gordon Peterson asked his panel to suggest a way to overcome the current impasse and get Congress and the White House moving on a budget deal. Thomas offered up a solution, but also expressed his frustration with Obama.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">“Yeah, because it’s happened before – Obama has got to be President of the United States,” Thomas said. “He has to be two things. He has to make a public case of how bad is this, because he is not doing that. He’s not being honest about just how bad this is going to be — no, he was partisan. He was God [bleep] Democrat! He was just, you know – being a party guy. I applaud the energy but it wasn’t getting me anywhere. He has got to rise above that and then in private, in private – he’s got to make a deal.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer’s sentiments fell in line with Thomas’s.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">“Instead of saying, as a president ought to say, is that we have a problem — it is a serious problem, it’s a growing problem, it’s a structural problem and we have to do something, he says, as in the sound bite you showed, it is a choice between helping the elderly on Medicare and corporate jets and oil tax breaks,” Krauthammer added. “That is pure demagoguery and that is not leadership.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">When acolytes start tossing criticisms instead of hosannas, I’d say we have consensus.
